An island of sheltered bays, exposed headlands, offshore rocks and shaded inlets, all painted with the graduated colours of lichen. About an hour’s drive away is the Gigrin Family Farm, which has the largest congregation of Red Kites in the area. Fields and cliffs are abloom with wildflowers in the summertime, and the Island’s wildlife prepares for mating season.

We LOVE birdwatching on Skomer Island. Be sure to arrive around an hour before the Visitor’s Center opens at 8 AM. There are no significant ground predators (such as large mammalian predators or snakes) on the islands.

You’ll begin seeing these beautiful birds as you boat over to the landing dock on the Island. If you’re interested in becoming a member, you can call, sign up online, or sign up on-site. Wildlife. Rats have preyed on 75 species of seabird around the world. Bookings will be offered for the same period in the same month next year. The ferries do not run on Mondays, so consider this if your visit falls on this day of the week.

You can rent binoculars at the Visitor’s Center for a small fee and buy a disposable camera (yep, you’ll need to get that film developed!). Biologists on the island remind visitors that although these wonderful creatures are great at photo ops, they have an alternative purpose for standing right in front of you and your camera. A 50-seater passenger boat transports visitors to the Island from Martin’s Haven (OS Grid Ref: SM 760 091), a small cove two miles on from Marloes village, which is 12 miles south west of the county town of Haverfordwest. With increasing numbers of people coming to the Pembrokeshire islands, the risk of rats and mice arriving has increased significantly. The puffin will go bounding right across the path and into their burrow before you can blink twice. On the busiest days extra guided island cruises are operated and visitors have the option to see the island and the wildlife from the boat. Small steps taken by you, during your visit, will help us all to protect Skomer and Skokholm for the future. The ferries leave at 10 AM, 11 AM, and noon. Skomer and Skokholm provide much of the income that the Trust needs to ensure that these two islands and over 100 other nature reserves can be managed effectively for wildlife. During spring the island is covered in a display of beautiful bluebells so vast that the whole island appears blue! From there, however, you’ll need to hitch a ride or get a taxi to Lockley Lodge. There is a picnic area near the old farmhouse in the center of the island, as well as restrooms, but otherwise, the Skomer is totally free of other usable structures.

Nearly all bed spaces for 2021 between mid- April and the end of July on both islands have been reserved for guests that have transferred their bookings from this year. The pathways near the water and burrows make birdwatching on Skomer Island easy. Whilst we have never transferred bookings from one year to the next we have decided that this is an appropriate course of action in this unprecedented situation.

The region is beautiful – we highly recommend the hike up to Mount Snowdon via the Llyn Cwellyn parking area. Join us on this three-day trip where there will be countless opportunities to photograph these seabirds at the height of the breeding season.
