The $1.8 million grant to the UA will fund the Undergraduate Biology Research Program, resulting in 21 years of consecutive HHMI funding. Independent laboratory research is a strongly encouraged supplement to MCB undergraduate studies. The four-year grant, which begins Sept. 1, will be used by the program to continue funding participating students in their research endeavors, according to Carol Bender, director of the program, and interim primary investigator of the HHMI grant. UBRP, which began in 1988, has since grown to provide a training basis for would-be scientists and health professionals. The program is a two-year program intended for the last two years of a student’s enrollment at the University of Arizona.

Students starting in Fall 2019 will select one of four sub-plans to tailor their degree: Each sub-plan has different degree requirements--please select the appropriate major check sheet above for a detailed list of requirements for each sub-plan.

We aim for students to develop a deep understanding of current ideas and problems in molecular and cellular biology. For students who started in Fall 2018 or later, the Bachelor of Science program in Molecular and Cellular Biology offers a comprehensive course of study across a wide span of scientific inquiry. In addition to discussing science, the Conference provides a forum for recognition of Outstanding UBRP mentors. Students are strongly encouraged to become involved in independent research, either by working in faculty labs or through targeted programs. Life Sciences South Building Students are paid for their time in the lab where they develop an understanding of scientific method and receive a realistic view of biological research. The 35-unit major includes core courses in Introductory Biology (MCB 181R/L & ECOL 182R/L), Molecular Basis of Life (MCB 301), Molecular Genetics (MCB 304), Cell & Developmental Biology (MCB 305), and Metabolic Biochemistry (BIOC 385). The Accelerated Master's Program (AMP) in MCB allows UA undergraduate students to earn both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in MCB in a total of 5 years. The Biology Major offers students extensive training in the structure, function, and evolution of biological systems from their component parts—molecules and cells—up through organisms, communities and ecosystems. All UBRP students are expected to present their experimental results at the annual UBRP Conference, held in January.

These elective courses allow students to explore course work in related fields, including microbiology, evolutionary biology, biochemistry, physiology, and plant sciences. Courses taken as part of these 12 units must also address laboratory, writing-emphasis, and in-depth study (Core Elective) requirements set forth by the department. Students may apply to continue their participation in UBRP during the academic year; the number of positions offered is based on available funding. These core courses are coupled with a vast choice of electives offered by several biology departments at the University, including the Departments of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Animal Sciences, Plant Sciences, Entomology, Microbiology, and Veterinary Sciences. Interested students access the online application by creating an account via the UBRP home page; the electronic application for the summer positions is posted October 1 each year and the deadline is February 1. "We are thrilled," said Carol Bender, who directs the program, also known as UBRP , which helped usher in the movement to involve undergraduates in UA research laboratories and projects.Â

Because the summer is roughly 14 weeks long, students can take a break and still fulfill program expectations. These students are sent acceptance letters instructing them that their participation in the program is contingent upon finding a faculty mentor with whom to work. Presentation and Next Steps: Payroll meetings are done in April and UBRP orientation occurs in May.
